Gua Sha is a tool used to help relieve muscle tension and improve circulation throughout the body. It boosts blood flow, promotes lymphatic drainage, and delivers oxygen and nutrients to the skin, resulting in a natural, healthy glow. Enjoy the many benefits of this time-tested Chinese practice!

Step 1: Clean and Tone For optimal results, use Gua Sha on a freshly cleansed face. If toner is used, apply it after cleansing. Additionally, ensure hands and the tool are clean. Cleanser and water suffice for sanitation.

Step 2: Apply Facial Hydration Apply a generous amount of face oil, cream, or water-based lotion to your face, neck, and chest. This helps the tool to glide more smoothly, though you may need to reapply it multiple times.

Step 3: Utilizing Gua Sha Begin the gua sha practice by holding the tool at a 30 to 45-degree angle, smoothly and gently running it along the surface of the skin. Movements should always be in an upward direction, following the lymphatic flow. It is recommended that each movement is repeated three to five times before moving on to the next area. Campbell-Semien suggests the following movements to be included in your gua sha facial ritual.
  • Jawline and chin: Starting at the center of the chin, glide your tool up to the earlobe to define the jawline.
  • Forehead: Start at the center and glide outward in 3 sections for a full forehead treatment.
  • Cheek: Move from the nose to the ears with sweeping strokes along the cheeks and cheekbones.
  • Undereye: Starting at the inner corner of the eye, move outward to the temple.
  • Brows: Moving from inner to outer, glide upwards on the brow bone.
  • Lips: Use gentle back and forth motions to provide a plumping effect.
  • Neck: Divide your neck into 4 sections, scraping each from bottom up.

Step 4: Finish the Regimen and Cleanse To get the most out of your gua sha experience, practitioners recommend performing gua sha three to four times a week for three to five minutes each session. Following your routine, massage any remaining product into the skin or wipe away residue with a damp cloth. Finish up with your usual skincare routine.
